McPhee provided the electrical and fire alarm packages for a complete renovation for MIT’s department of the Institute for Medical Engineering Sciences, housed within the 3rd floor of Building E25. Whitaker College (Building E25) is one wing of an L-shaped medical building on MIT's East Campus linked by a full-height atrium to MIT's Health Services Center.

This project included a complete gut and renovation of an existing laboratory and retrofit of the Institute for Medical Engineering & Science headquarters.  McPhee began performing the work on a cost plus fee basis for the project then during construction, upon completion of design documents, McPhee converted to providing a lump sum subcontract.   The scope of work included a complete upgrade of the third floor electrical distribution, lighting, power devices, and mechanical and fire alarm systems.

McPhee specific scope included completely new electrical and fire alarm systems for the 20,000 square foot lab floor including electrical demolition and new work consisting of approximately:

  • 630 light fixtures
  • 450 power devices
  • 300 linear feet of wiremold at lab benches
  • 18 new power panel boards
  • 37 buck boost transformers for special equipment
  • 120 new fire alarm devices
  • 265 linear feet of cable tray

On a previous project, McPhee completed the renovations for the entire remainder of the Whitaker College E25 Building.  See that profile here.
